There are surely many who are tired of discussions about handshakes and gender-segregated swimming; isn’t that just symbolic politics? Maybe, but symbols are not insignificant. It is in the small everyday encounters that democracy must live. Therefore, it is only fair to insist that one can shake hands with a person of the opposite sex.
