US and UK Launch New Strikes on Houthis

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced new military strikes targeting eight locations linked to the Houthi movement in Yemen, aiming at underground storage facilities, radar systems, and missiles. The joint statement described these strikes as ‘proportional and necessary’. A statement from British Foreign Office confirmed that the targets included military areas near an airport in the capital, Sanaa. The strikes are a response to Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. These Houthi-initiated attacks, supported by Iran and Hamas, have been occurring since November against vessels around Yemen, mainly retaliating against Israel’s war on Hamas. Resultantly, many shipping companies have diverted from the Red Sea route, opting to sail around Africa instead.
