Supreme Court denies Trump trial postponement
The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected Donald Trump’s attempt to delay sentencing in a case regarding hush money payments, according to Reuters. Sentencing is set for Friday morning. Judge Juan Merchan is leaning towards granting Trump an unconditional release, avoiding jail but resulting in a criminal record. All attempts by Trump to halt the case have been dismissed. On his platform Truth Social, Trump decries the case as a ‘witch hunt’ and plans to appeal. Trump, who was found guilty on 34 charges last year, paid $130,000 to Stormy Daniels in 2016 to keep a supposed affair secret, illegally recording it as a campaign expense. Despite claiming immunity as president-elect, Judge Merchan dismissed this defense. Trump denies guilt and the affair, and is the first former president to be convicted of a crime.
