Denmark and EU nations call for offshore asylum centers
Denmark is leading a charge, along with 15 other EU countries, to establish refugee processing centers outside of Europe. This initiative, communicated through a letter to the EU Commission, aims to alleviate the migrant pressure on Europe’s borders. The proposal has gained traction among several countries, such as Italy, Greece, Poland, and Austria, although major nations like Germany and France have not signed. Previously, Denmark planned a center in Rwanda but has since sought an EU-wide solution. According to Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek, increasing migration challenges have garnered greater support for innovative solutions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen observed a growing interest in such centers. Assessments suggest that upcoming EU elections, driven by migration concerns, could reinforce this push for change.
