Calls to centralize Danish nursing home responsibility

Organizations are advocating for the responsibility of Danish nursing homes to be shifted away from municipalities to a new central authority. This appeal comes from three major groups: Ældre Sagen, Danske Patienter, and Danske Handicaporganisationer, together representing over two million members. They express concern that patients and citizens often fall through the cracks due to a lack of coordination between municipalities and regions. The call for change precedes the government’s presentation of a health sector structural reform proposal in August. The reform aims to provide better and more cohesive support for the ill and frail. However, the Chairman of the Municipalities’ National Association warns against such a degree of centralization, while the Chairman of the Danish Regions does not believe any of the proposed models offer a sufficiently unified solution for the healthcare system.
