Herlufsholm sues for state subsidies return
Herlufsholm boarding school is suing the Danish Agency for Education and Quality (Stuk) to reclaim 27 million kroner, equating to half a year’s state subsidy, which it claims was unjustly withdrawn. The leadership of the school has declined to comment to the press, and neither will their lawyer, Ole Spiermann. According to Berlingske, which reviewed the legal filing, the suit is focused on the legal assessment of facts rather than the facts themselves. The school seeks to challenge the agency’s legal authority to demand repayment of the funds. In May 2022, a TV 2 documentary featured former students describing experiences of violence, sexual abuse, and bullying at the school. Stuk decided in May 2023 that the school must return the subsidy, as it had failed to comply with the required standards of freedom and democratic governance.
