Delayed Danish asylum center amid UK Rwanda Law
The UK Parliament’s passing of a law to process asylum seekers in Rwanda doesn’t directly impact Denmark’s similar plans, says Danish Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek. He considers it positive and aligns with a broader trend in Western countries to reform asylum systems. Denmark’s initiative, however, has been on standby since the coalition government formed in 2022, which includes parties opposed to the Rwanda center. Bek rules out a quick EU-wide solution, declining to provide a timeline, but hopes the new European Parliament will prioritize the issue. The UK’s law forces judges to recognize Rwanda as safe, counteracting a Supreme Court decision against it. Bek stresses that a European solution would address more significant issues like Mediterranean migrant deaths and prioritize the most in need, unlike unilateral actions.
