Red–Green Alliance urges EU to recognize abortion as a right

Rosa Lund, the spokesperson for gender equality of the Danish political party Red–Green Alliance, asserts that the right to abortion is under pressure across Europe, citing near-impossible conditions to obtain an abortion in Poland and Malta. Lund emphasizes the necessity of inscribing abortion rights into the EU’s social charter of fundamental rights, obligating member states to protect these rights. EU’s charter already encapsulates ideals of human dignity, freedom, equality, and solidarity. Lund urges Denmark to use its influence to carry the fight for abortion rights into the European Parliament. The amendment of EU’s fundamental rights requires unanimous consent from all member states, which Lund acknowledges may currently be challenging, noting Poland’s likely opposition. French President Emmanuel Macron has also recently announced his intention to include abortion rights in the EU charter, highlighting that nothing in Europe is set in stone and must be defended.
