Kosovo prison officers to train in Denmark

In the first half of 2025, 20 to 25 prison officers from Kosovo will be receiving additional training in Denmark as part of a deal to lease 300 prison places in Kosovo to Denmark. Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard confirmed the initiative as a vital step towards preparing the Kosovo prison for convicted criminals deported from Denmark. The Conservatives’ justice spokesperson, Mai Mercado, supports the choice, although admitting it is not an ideal situation due to the shortage of local recruitment. Kosovo ratified the prison agreement with Denmark in May after delays, expecting to start hosting deportee prisoners by autumn 2026. The original plan targeted early 2023. Hummelgaard will visit Kosovo’s Gjilan prison to mark the project’s progression and discuss with Kosovan authorities about expediting the facility’s renovation.
