Greenland preferred for Arctic ambassador

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen suggests it is natural for the new Arctic Ambassador to be based in Greenland, as desired by Greenland. During a Tuesday press conference in Aalborg, Frederiksen expressed her support for Greenland’s wish. Discussions have been held with government colleagues from the Faroe Islands and Greenland about the political and economic situation of the Commonwealth, where the Arctic Ambassador’s position was a topic. Greenland’s government chair Múte B. Egede acknowledges the disagreement but sees openings for further dialogue. Last year there were tensions when Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen appointed Tobias Elling Rehfeld as Arctic Ambassador without consulting the Commonwealth, leading to criticism from Egede who preferred a Greenlandic representative for the role.
