Royal couple to attend Auschwitz’s 80th liberation day
The royal couple will travel to Poland later this month to attend the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27th, as announced in the royal house’s calendar. Crown Prince Frederik previously participated in the 70th anniversary of the liberation in 2015. The event commemorates the end of the Holocaust when about a million Jews were killed in Auschwitz and the neighboring death camp Birkenau, and honors the arrival of Soviet soldiers who liberated the camp, finding around 7,000 prisoners, most sick and near death. Leaders from around the world, including all Auschwitz survivors, are expected to attend the ceremony at the Auschwitz museum. Additionally, it is stated that Israeli representatives are allowed to participate despite previous concerns about the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu due to an ICC warrant. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirms that no arrests will occur during the commemoration.
