Today’s news / The deadly disease no one discusses
COPD patients fall between the cracks, have no real rights and have difficulty getting, for example, smoking cessation treatment and going to a hospice. The deadly disease no one discusses

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), also known as smoker’s lung, is the leading cause of death in Denmark, largely affecting the elderly and former smokers. Recent data from the Danish Register for COPD reveals a 31% mortality rate within a year for patients first hospitalized with COPD, and a 16% death rate within 30 days of COPD-related hospitalization. Anders Løkke, chair of the register, underscores the gravity of these figures, highlighting the lack of discussion and support for COPD compared to other illnesses like cancer. At least 85% of COPD cases are caused by smoking, yet stigma often delays diagnosis. Løkke emphasizes the urgent need for a national COPD action plan, akin to the measures in place for cancer. Effective interventions such as rehabilitation and smoking cessation can significantly improve patients’ health, yet the cost of smoking cessation medication is not covered, impacting those with limited financial resources.
