Experts to tackle math challenges in schools

The National Center for Development of Mathematics Teaching (NCUM) plans to form an expert group to support primary school students troubled by mathematics and prevent these challenges from arising. According to a press release by NCUM, around 15 percent of children in primary schools face long-term difficulties with math, as indicated in the 2023 Egmont Report. The expert group aims to elaborate research-based proposals, compile research knowledge, and map practical experience to facilitate interventions that can assist students. Morten Blomhøj, center leader at NCUM, announces that the group will include researchers experienced in math difficulties. The average math grade in 9th grade with assistance has dropped from 7.7 to 6.5, while math grades without help have fallen from 7.7 to 6.6. Mattias Tesfaye, the Minister for Children and Education, has allocated 500 million Danish kroner annually to aid students struggling with Danish and math, and he expressed support for the formation of this expert group.
