Rasmussen condemns attack on UN forces

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed deep concern over the reports of shooting at UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. He emphasized that any attack on UN forces is unacceptable and that their protection is an obligation of all conflict parties. Earlier on Thursday, UNIFIL stated that an Israeli tank fired at a watchtower in Naqoura, southern Lebanon, injuring two UNIFIL soldiers. The incident has been criticized internationally. EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, condemned the action on social media. France and Spain demand an explanation from Israeli authorities, according to Reuters. Israel admitted to military operations near a UNIFIL base and claimed UN forces were instructed to stay in protected areas before the firing. Israel’s UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, suggested UNIFIL relocate to avoid the conflict with Hezbollah, as per Reuters.
