PM Frederiksen anticipates US cooperation

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expresses continued support for the ‘strong transatlantic collaboration’ with President Donald Trump following his inauguration. Amid heightened focus on U.S.-Denmark relations due to Trump’s interest in Greenland, Frederiksen confirms their conversation did not alleviate threats of tariffs on Danish goods but emphasizes non-recommendation of reduced economic collaboration. Trump previously suggested using military or economic coercion to acquire Greenland, considering tariffs if Denmark refuses a transfer. Greenland’s government, led by Múte B. Egede, refuses the notion of sale but shows readiness to enhance cooperation, particularly in mining. Despite Trump’s 2019 interest in purchasing Greenland, which was firmly rejected by Frederiksen, the dialogue continues with no change in the U.S.’s largest export market, Denmark, potentially facing significant trade impacts.
