Danish MPs face tax on travel allowance
Several Danish MPs are set to receive a bill for unpaid taxes on travel allowances from 2021 to 2024. The lawmakers had received these tax-free allowances for car travel in violation of existing laws. Folketinget’s President, Søren Gade, expressed disappointment over the lack of order in this matter. An error caused about five million Danish kroner to be wrongfully exempt from tax since 2013. A controversial proposal for retroactive tax exemption was withdrawn after political backlash. Future travel allowances compensated for car travel to political meetings outside the home electoral district will be taxable. Payments made prior to 2021 are considered legally expired and will not be reviewed or taxed.
