State auditors slam railway safety system
The state auditors criticize Banedanmark for significant vulnerabilities in the IT security of the railway signal system, warning of risks to train operations that could disrupt service and impact the economy. Banedanmark has been replacing signal systems for 15 years, and delays have pushed the completion to 2033, with southern Denmark lagging behind. Banedanmark’s signal system, deemed critical infrastructure, meets only 3 of 19 security criteria, fails to meet 10, and partially meets 6. The Center for Cybersecurity assesses the sector’s cybercrime risk as ‘very high’. Banedanmark’s digital signals director assures that passenger safety is not an issue, stating that issues identified in the by the state auditors are being addressed or have already been handled.
