Danish firm fined for bribes in Mauritius

Danish construction company Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractors (BWSC) has agreed to pay a fine of ten million DKK for bribing officials in Mauritius related to a power plant bid. The National Unit for Special Crime (NSK) announced the fine, which follows BWSC’s own 2019 admission of potential involvement in bribery. The bribery occurred from January 2011 to October 2017 as BWSC aimed to win the Saint Louis power plant project, worth 790 million DKK. They were penalized for paying at least 632,000 DKK to politicians, officials, and other decision-makers through intermediaries to gain access to confidential information beneficial for their bid. BWSC successfully secured and completed the power plant project by November 2017.
