Energy drink maker calls for 16+ age limit
State Drinks, a Danish energy drink producer, is urging politicians to introduce a minimum age of 16 for purchasing energy drinks. Jon Andersen, founder and commercial director of State Drinks, says the company’s goal is to create a better drink for adults, not children. Lidl Denmark has enforced a similar age restriction since 2018. The Danish Food Administration advises against children consuming energy drinks and recommends that teenagers drink no more than 250 milliliters per day without other caffeine sources, and no more than 0.5 liters of sugary drinks weekly. Coop’s information director, Jens Juul Nielsen, also believes a 16+ age restriction should be implemented. Yet, the Danish Brewery Association, representing Royal Unibrew and Carlsberg, opposes the age limit, stating that facts about children’s caffeine consumption from various sources are needed before considering a ban.
