Agriculture group to codify debate etiquette
Sustainable Agriculture (Bæredygtigt Landbrug) is creating an ethical code for civil discourse after members made harsh statements. One member implied that economist Michael Svarer, who discussed a proposed agricultural greenhouse gas tax at the group’s general assembly, would have been hanged in 1824. In response to the incident, chairman Peter Kiær firmly distanced the group from those remarks. Aside from the comments directed at Svarer, critical words were also aimed at Maria Reumert Gjerding, President of the Danish Society for Nature Conservation. Despite the backlash, including from Torsten Schack of the political party Venstre, Kiær emphasized the right to express frustration over the threat of a CO2 tax on agriculture, though he insisted it must be done respectfully.
