LA wants benefit recipients to fund defense expenses
Future defense expenditures are expected to rise. Liberal Alliance (LA) proposes raising Denmark’s defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, requiring 36 billion kroner, according to Cepos. They plan to fund this through an unemployment benefits reform, saving 8.6 billion kroner, and a public service reform, removing state subsidies to DR, freeing 2.2 billion kroner. Additionally, 23 billion kroner will come from budget allocations. Denmark is awaiting NATO’s strength targets for details on financing. LA leader Alex Vanopslagh urges prompt action. LA’s unemployment reform includes halving the benefit period and reducing graduate rates. Social Democrat Simon Kollerup criticizes its social impact, and Enhedslisten’s Pelle Dragsted calls it “rash and dangerous.” The government has already planned over 120 billion kroner for defense through 2033, using over 3% of GDP.
