60% of Ukrainian refugees in Denmark wish to stay

Two years into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a study from Copenhagen University’s Department of Psychology reveals that 60% of Ukrainian refugees in Denmark don’t want to return home post-war. Earlier, in September 2023, the figure was nearly 50%. The study, led by Karen-Inge Karstoft, showed improvements among refugees, with fewer PTSD symptoms and better acclimation to Danish society. Many have joined the workforce, established social networks, and envisage staying in Denmark. Nearly 4,000 out of 7,000 Ukrainian adults surveyed have benefitted from a special law allowing steep 42,000 Ukrainians to reside, work, and attend school in Denmark until March 2025. However, one-third are concerned about being sent back to Ukraine, with 24% still experiencing PTSD or CPTSD, down from 29% in prior surveys.
