Citizenship application fees increase by 50 percent

It will now be more expensive to become a Danish citizen. Previously costing 4000 kroner, the fee will increase to 6000 kroner to better reflect the processing costs, as outlined in a press release. Minister for Immigration and Integration Kaare Dybvad Bek stated that it is sensible to raise the citizenship application fee to match state expenses. For first-time applicants born or raised in Denmark, the fee remains 4000 kroner due to international obligations. Starting June 18, only the first reapplication is free, with subsequent ones costing 3000 kroner each. Bek noted that processing multiple reapplications incurs costs, thus necessitating the fee. In 2025, citizenships will only be granted in spring due to Denmark’s EU chairmanship duties later that year, delaying new applications until 2026.
