Students want screen-free alternatives over bans
Laura Drachmann Poulsen, the chairperson of Danish School Students, responds to the Agency for Teaching and Quality’s (STUK) 12 recommendations on screen use in schools, saying that removing mobile phones from classrooms is not the solution. Instead, it is essential to integrate technology education and provide alternatives that students would choose, such as engaging learning communities. The recommendations include creating mobile-free schools and blocking access to irrelevant websites. Rasmus Edelberg, head of the school boards and parents’ organization School and Parents, points out that the issue extends beyond mobiles to digital educational platforms that provide unengaging and non-dialogue based learning. Additionally, while schools have been working on minimizing phone distractions, Edelberg finds the recommendations outdated and believes that parent involvement is crucial for managing children’s screen time outside of school.
