Brazilian theatre illuminated for Queen Mary

The Danish flag’s red and white colors shone on the facade of the 125-year-old Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, Brazil, in honor of Queen Mary’s visit. The queen attended a play about river people in the Amazon’s interior regions. Upon her arrival, she was greeted by Amazonas Governor Wilson Lima, who gifted her a miniature theatre model. Opened in 1898 during the rubber boom, the theatre symbolizes the wealth brought to the region through trade. The queen’s visit started with a boat trip, showcasing climate change impacts, like Rio Negro’s 15 meters lower water level, affecting local shipping. She also learned how deforestation in the Amazon has cleared 17% of the original forest since 1988, an area as large as Turkey.
