Students’ thesis published in renowned journal

A bachelor’s project by five physics students from Aalborg University has been published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature, according to Videnskab.dk. Their supervisor, Professor Thomas Tauris, expressed surprise at the quality of work produced by bachelor students for such a reputable journal. The students, Hans Christian Gjedsig Larsen, Claudia Larsen, Peter Nørgaard Thomsen, Jonatan Tøffner-Clausen, and Casper Christian Pedersen challenged a 2023 article about a rare supernova explosion leading to two celestial bodies orbiting each other. Their calculations suggest a more than 92% chance that the supernova in question was ordinary, compared to the rare type suggested by New Zealand researchers. The Danish students’ findings highlight the need for more extensive data to develop theories about the formation of such systems and understand the universe, as stated by Noel Richardson, the first author of the study in a response.
