Schumer urges Biden to forego reelection bid

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has reportedly suggested to President Joe Biden that it would be better for the country and the Democratic Party if he does not run for reelection. ABC News broke the story, according to Reuters, though the source is not disclosed. The advice came during a meeting on Saturday. About 20 Democratic members of the House and several party donors and supporters, including actor George Clooney, have already asked the 81-year-old Biden to step aside for another candidate. This follows Biden’s hesitant and perceived weak performance in a televised debate against Donald Trump and ensuing gaffes in which he confused politicians’ names. Meanwhile, Biden has consistently dismissed the possibility of withdrawing but mentioned he would consider it if his health demanded. The White House has also announced Biden tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms.
