Christiania digs up Pusher Street on April 6
Pusher Street in the Christiania area of Copenhagen will be excavated on April 6, in a community-led effort supported by local authorities and the government. The initiative invites not just Copenhagen residents but all of Denmark to participate. According to Berlingske, the decision was made at Christiania’s general meeting on March 7. The day marks the start of a plan which includes a renovation and redevelopment of the area, with the aim of replacing illegal cannabis trade with other activities and finding lasting solutions. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard welcomes the plan as a crucial step toward closing Pusher Street for good, with a belief in ending blatant organized crime in the area. The government has committed 14.3 million kroner for the first phase, contingent on contributions from Copenhagen Municipality and the Christiania Foundation. The Municipality has already allocated two million kroner to support the planning process.
