PM: No Guarantee Against Future Pirate Dilemmas

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen admits she cannot guarantee that similar situations with captive pirates receiving residence permits in Denmark will not occur due to international obligations. During a press conference, she expressed her inability to explain or justify a case wherein a 41-year-old Nigerian man involved in a 2021 attack on a helicopter from the frigate “Esbern Snare” received a permit. She emphasized that the man does not belong in Denmark and is only there because of international obligations. An inter-ministerial working group will handle potential captures as a frigate is soon to be deployed to the Red Sea to monitor and protect shipping lanes from attacks, like the one in the Gulf of Guinea in 2021. Frederiksen stands by Denmark’s active role in combating piracy and does not regret their actions in the Gulf of Guinea.
