WHO declares global health crisis due to mpox
The WHO announced a global health crisis on Wednesday due to an outbreak of mpox, following its spread from the DR Congo to neighboring countries. The mpox virus can spread through close contact and typically causes mild illness, but can occasionally be fatal, presenting flu-like symptoms and a blistering rash. The PHEIC declaration aims to trigger a coordinated global response and fund vaccine and treatment efforts. A new variant has emerged, increasing transmission ease. Over 17,000 suspected cases and 517 deaths have been reported in Africa this year, a 160% increase over the same period last year. While the situation may not immediately concern Denmark, vigilance is necessary due to the delayed onset of symptoms allowing for wider spread, underscores Flemming Konradsen from the University of Copenhagen. Danish company Bavarian Nordic saw a share rise above 12% amid prospects of vaccine orders due to the outbreak.
