Shelters overwhelmed by abandoned pets
This summer, the number of animals registered at Danish shelters has reached an unusually high level, with 2,181 animals across nine facilities, compared to 1,649 during the same period last year. According to Karina Fisker, shelter manager at Dyrenes Beskyttelse, cats, kittens, rabbits, and guinea pigs are particularly overflowing in shelters. Many are abandoned due to owners failing to arrange pet care during vacation. While shelters manage to find space, they lack foster families to care for animals until they’re ready for adoption. Increased stays at shelters are not beneficial for animals, emphasizing the need for foster care for proper socialization and future well-being. Currently, the highest occupancy is in Brande, Fyn, and Roskilde shelters.
