Greenland court extends detention of activist
In Greenland, a judge has extended environmental activist Paul Watson’s imprisonment until October 2, according to a press release from Greenland Police. The extension is meant to ensure Watson’s presence while a decision on his extradition is pending. Watson has been detained since late July after being arrested in Nuuk due to an international arrest warrant from Japan, which seeks his extradition for an incident in Antarctica in 2010. Japanese authorities accuse him of assaulting whalers and preventing their activities. Watson denies the charges. His defense showed a video in court, claimed to demonstrate his innocence, but the judge refused to allow another video from Sea Shepherd’s ship to be presented. The Danish Ministry of Justice is deliberating on Watson’s possible extradition, awaiting legal assessments from Greenland Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
