Denmark abstains from FN’s neutral Ukraine vote

On Monday evening, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution that maintains a neutral stance on the war in Ukraine. While ten members, including the United States, Russia, China, and South Korea, voted in favor, five countries abstained from voting: Denmark, France, the UK, Greece, and Slovenia. Denmark, which will take a seat in the Security Council starting January 1, 2025, for two years, is among countries that have not been able to pass resolutions due to Russia having a veto as a permanent member. The adopted resolution, seen as a diplomatic victory for European countries and Ukraine, mentions Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and confirms support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. It was altered from the original U.S. text, which did not acknowledge Ukraine’s borders nor place blame on Russia for the outbreak of the war.
