New agreement boosts weather event response

Denmark is set to bolster its preparedness for severe and complex weather events by hiring additional uniformed personnel and investing in specialized climate equipment in 2025 and 2026. The emergency preparedness agreement, endorsed by minister for civil protection Torsten Schack Pedersen and parties behind the defense settlement in the parliament, allocates 608 million DKK over the two years, with an annual 183 million until 2033. The exact number of new employees has not been disclosed, but 145 million is reserved for personnel and urgent infrastructure needs. The plan also includes the addition of 50 conscripts from 2027 to assist local rescue services. While details on the climate equipment are not included, a procurement plan will be developed collaboratively. Amidst criticism, the agreement is part of a larger defense settlement and represents a step toward an evolving national threat landscape, ensuring a foundation for Danish security.
