Government to create separate prisons for vulnerable inmates

A prison term can lead to a more entrenched criminal career for vulnerable inmates who are exploited by stronger prisoners. To address this, the Danish government plans to establish separate prison units for the most vulnerable in society. Nanna Gotfredsen, social spokesperson for the Moderates, emphasizes that these individuals face brutal conditions in general prison populations. Gotfredsen, who has experience working with homeless and substance-abusing individuals, notes that weak inmates often become entangled in powerful hierarchies. The initiative is part of a new penal reform that aims to enhance penalties for violent crimes while allocating funds towards inmate rehabilitation. The government plans to invest 1.5 billion kroner and create 350 new positions by 2030, emphasizing therapeutic and socio-educational treatments to prevent new criminal activities.
