Airline reported for greenwashing
The Danish Consumer Ombudsman has filed a police report against airline KLM for using misleading statements regarding the sustainability of its flights in a radio advertisement. KLM claimed flying with them would be ‘more sustainable’ as they intended to use ‘a portion of sustainable fuel’. However, only one percent of the fuel they used would be replaced with fuel considered sustainable under EU regulations. The Consumer Ombudsman, Torben Jensen, believes this does not equate to ‘a significant step’ toward sustainability, as the consumers were led to believe. KLM is awaiting the next steps in the case, stating the importance of adapting its marketing to the latest rules and guidelines. Under the Marketing Law, companies must not provide false or misleading information in advertisements, with potential fines if consumers are deceived.
