Danish Spotify artists gain global support

Danish artists are seizing the opportunity to reach a global audience through Spotify, with 45% of their royalties on Spotify last year coming from abroad, a new report from the music service reveals. According to Johan Seidefors, Spotify’s Nordic music chief, the trend of music transcending borders is especially driven by young people who are more open to new music in different languages. Danish musicians generated over 311 million Danish crowns in royalties from Spotify in 2023, a significant increase of over 75% since 2017. This rise is attributed to the growth of the streaming industry and an increase in artists. In 2023, 111 Danish artists each earned more than half a million crowns in royalties from Spotify, marking a 60% increase since 2018. However, these royalties are initially paid to the rights holders, which could be independent artists or, more likely, record labels, indicating that the actual payout to musicians depends on individual agreements.
