Chinese EV’s impress with extended warranties

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are outperforming European competitors in one significant area – warranty terms. According to a study by the Danish motoring organization FDM, except for Polestar, all the surveyed Chinese brands offer at least five years of warranty on the vehicle and typically eight years on the battery, surpassing the typical two-year warranty from European makers. FDM’s lawyer Michael Ern Nielsen sees this as very positive and hopes it will prompt competitors to reconsider their warranty offerings. However, FDM advises careful reading of the fine print as some warranties have stringent conditions that must be met. For instance, MG requires monthly car washes if residing within 50 km of the sea, and Hongqi demands using specifically numbered spare parts for service. Additionally, FDM criticizes the ambiguity surrounding how battery warranties are defined and wants importers and manufacturers to clarify their measurement methods.
