One in five young students reluctant to attend school

A report from ‘Børns Vilkår’ indicates that one in five children in 4th and 7th grade in Denmark seldom or never want to go to school, stemming from a fear of not being able to be themselves, finding lessons boring, and long school days. The study, funded by the Nordea Foundation, involved surveys from 2,250 students and interviews with 150 students from these grades. Of particular concern is that 24% of the children feel they cannot be themselves without being teased or bullied. The issue is most acute among 7th grade girls, with one in three feeling they can’t be themselves. The report suggests that having supportive teachers and friends at school is crucial for children’s well-being and integration into school life.
