Mette Frederiksen notes conflict risk in Middle East

Ahead of an extraordinary EU summit in Brussels, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen voiced concerns over the potential escalation of conflicts in the Middle East following Iran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel. She indicated that more victims and instability are possible as the EU urges all parties to avoid further escalation. Despite EU’s calls for restraint, there are signs that Israel might retaliate. The British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, after meeting with Israeli officials, suggested that Israel seems set on responding. Frederiksen pointed out Israel’s right to self-defense in light of Iran’s attacks but also highlighted Israel’s duty to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Despite reiterating the EU and USA’s caution against letting the situation spiral out of control, Frederiksen acknowledged Israel’s right to consider its response to the attack.
