Record-Size government, same staff pledge

Denmark’s new Social Democrat-led government has reached a record-high number of 25 ministers, the largest since a constitutional amendment in 1953. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen sees no issues with the size and expresses pride in the government’s policies and achievements. Frederiksen assures that despite the reorganization creating new ministerial departments and consolidating others, there will be no increase in the total number of state employees. The previous record was held by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen’s government with 24 ministers. Amidst a significant rise in administrative staff since 2017, with over 16,000 new positions and 12,400 added during Frederiksen’s tenure, the government aims to cut 1,000 full-time positions from state administration by 2025, with plans to find more cutbacks in the coming years.
