Greenland’s PM joins Anti-Racism rally
Greenland’s Premier Múte B. Egede and other politicians joined a demonstration in Nuuk on Thursday against Danish racism and prejudice. Under the banner ‘Denmark, here’s the limit’, demonstrators with Greenlandic flags and banners stated ‘inuit lives matter’ and ‘stop discrimination’, with some also taping their mouths to symbolize being voiceless in Denmark’s ongoing debates. The rally, attended by 200-300 people, aimed to protest demeaning treatment towards Greenlanders. According to organizer Pernille Benjaminsen, there is widespread negative rhetoric against Greenlanders, especially evident on social media and in Danish media lately. The event coincides with tensions in Danish-Greenlandic relations, recently heightened by a police complaint against Danish TV satire ‘Tæt på sandheden’ for a sketch perceived as racist. The program was also a topic at the demonstration, with a protestor’s sign stating, ‘Close to the truth – yes, the truth about your racism’.
