Denmark nears deal on Kosovo prison lease
Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard expects a soon-to-be finalized agreement to lease 300 prison spaces in Kosovo, having received positive signals during his visit to the country. Despite initial opposition blockades in Kosovo’s parliament due to internal disputes and calls for new elections, the situation has softened, leading to renewed optimism. The rental of Gjilan prison facilities is part of the Danish government’s effort to alleviate overcrowding and address staff shortages in Danish prisons. Convicted criminals awaiting deportation will be housed in Kosovo, subject to the ratification of the agreement by Kosovo’s parliament. Kosovo’s Justice Minister, Albulena Haxhiu, has proposed the bill and aims to bring it to vote post-Hummelgaard’s visit. Support from opposition parties is vital to secure the two-thirds majority needed for international treaties in Kosovo. Hummelgaard assures that the prison conditions will meet Danish standards after renovations.
