Danish ministers reject Trump’s Greenland bid

Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen firmly dismiss U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring Greenland. They stress that Greenland is an independent entity with its own people, in both local and international law. They argue that Greenland prefers to remain within the Danish realm along with the Faroe Islands rather than become a U.S. state. Prime minister Mette Frederiksen has been diplomatically cautious, stating that ‘Greenland is for the Greenlanders’, and it’s their decision regarding independence. Frederiksen is currently on a European tour, visiting leaders in Germany, France, and soon in Brussels for talks with NATO’s secretary general, Mark Rutte.
