Denmark hits NATO defence spending goal
Denmark met NATO’s defense spending target of two percent of GDP in 2023, announced by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. This is a first-time achievement since the guideline was established at the NATO summit in Wales in 2014. Increased European defense expenditures, particularly following the Ukraine conflict, have led to Denmark’s fulfillment of the goal, including military donations to Ukraine in its calculations. Poulsen confirms that these figures follow NATO’s standards for measuring spending. The accomplishment comes amid discussions of collective defense contributions and shortly after comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump questioning the defense of non-compliant NATO countries. Poulsen assures Denmark’s defense spending will remain at this level going forward and emphasizes the importance of solidarity within NATO.
