Norlys fined for misleading marketing
Energy company Norlys has agreed to pay a fine of three million Danish kroner after the Consumer Ombudsman reported the company to the police for misleading marketing practices. Norlys had informed consumers that they could gain discounts of 11% and 15% on insurances by being electricity customers with Norlys, however the actual discounts available were 8% and 12%. Consumer Ombudsman Torben Jensen stated that these misleading discounts suggested larger savings than what customers could nearly obtain without being Norlys’ clients. The company’s director, Mads Brøgger, acknowledged that they should have been more precise but insisted there was no intent to mislead. Norlys decided to pay the fine voluntarily to conclude the case, with 290 customers having used the relevant offer. The fine was assessed using a new, stricter model based on company turnover.
