Social Liberals propose ban on bottom trawl fishing

The Social Liberal Party in Denmark, led by Martin Lidegaard, advocates for banning bottom trawling to protect marine environment. Announced at the People’s Meeting in Bornholm, the shift aims for a sustainable fishing strategy, reducing nitrogen runoff, pollution, and ocean damage. Their plan includes phasing out harmful trawling tools for non-invasive alternatives, promoting gentle fishing methods, particularly for lobster, using pots instead of trawls, and designating 30% of national waters as protected areas by 2030. A think tank estimates an annual cost of 50 million kroner for these initiatives. Lidegaard emphasizes the urgency, criticizing the government’s lack of response, and pointing out the severe impact of current practices where one kilo of caught lobster can kill 200 kilos of other sea life.
