62,000 birds to be culled after avian flu outbreak

A virulent and deadly strain of avian influenza has been detected in a turkey flock in South West Zealand and a chicken flock in Southern Jutland, according to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. Approximately 62,000 birds are to be culled as a result. Earlier in the week, three large turkey flocks in South West Zealand were also culled due to this contagious disease. Unit chief Mette Kirkeskov Sie emphasized the importance of good biosecurity measures and compliance with the administration’s advice and rules. Restriction zones have been established around the affected farms to limit the risk of further spread. Food Minister Jacob Jensen acknowledges the serious situation and the restrictive measures in place to contain the outbreak. Since December 18, 2023, the risk of transmission from wild birds has been rated high.
