Tech giants propose steps against illegal content
Four of the world’s largest tech companies submitted an action plan to Nordic justice ministers on Monday, aimed at reducing illegal content on their platforms. Danish justice minister Peter Hummelgaard, alongside ministers from Sweden, Norway, and the Faroe Islands, labeled the plan a ‘small’ step towards greater responsibility by Google, Meta, Snapchat and TikTok. The firms promise to enhance artificial intelligence to scan for potentially criminal or borderline illegal content and to adjust algorithms to steer users away from such content. However, Hummelgaard states that mere promises are insufficient, demanding more concrete action. He emphasized the limited capability of individual nations to regulate social media companies and recognized the role of the EU in such regulation. Hummelgaard plans to prioritize this issue during Denmark’s EU Presidency next year.
