Government to expel all foreigners with prison terms

The Danish Government plans to change the rules so that all foreigners sentenced to unconditional prison time will be deported. The step ladder arrangement, which considers various factors such as how long a foreigner has lived in Denmark, will be eliminated. The longer a foreigner has resided in Denmark, the more challenging it has been to deport them. According to minister Kaare Dybvad Bek, it’s time to crack down harder on criminals deserving of unconditional jail sentences. However, in summer 2022, attempts to remove the arrangement met skepticism among researchers, highlighting that many exceptions already exist. The ministry expects additional cases for expulsion consideration, potentially leading to double-digit yearly increases in deportations, though this estimate carries significant uncertainty.
